Food For Thought…Mercury Contamination!
Most of us know that levels of mercury can be found in fish, but were you aware that mercury can also be found in High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)? A report was issued, last month, by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy that stated that mercury contamination was found in some commercial HFCS.
According to the Institute, the FDA is fully aware of this contamination and has done nothing to solve the problem or inform consumers of this issue. To prove their theory, the Institute went out and purchased many of these suspected items that described HFCS to be one of the top main ingredients in the product; items such as, soft drinks, snack foods, and many items that were marketed towards children. They then took the merchandise back to the lab to be tested; low and behold mercury was detected in approximately 1 out of every 3 of the 55 items collected! Some of the brands that were mentioned to be contaminated were Quaker, Hunt’s, Manwich, Smuckers, Kraft, Yoplait and Hershey’s syrup!
These products do not announce that the HFCS that they are using contains mercury grade caustic soda, but we as a consumer should probably know these things! Here’s what we can do….nearly every product that we purchase has either a 1-800 number or a website located on the label, we should use that information to confront these manufacturers and find out what is in their product! We can also contact our elected officials and confront them with the question of why the FDA is not informing and protected the consumers of this pollutant in our food! We can also spread the word…
Spreading the Word,

Whew…I’m in luck, I don’t eat those items. cept Quaker Oats. I get those instant packs you zap in the microwave. Wonder if those are contaminated?
Good post
Sandy
Thanks for the info. This is a real eye opener. I love your blog, just found it today.
Sandy, I would look on the packaging and see if it contains HFCS, just to be sure, even a little bit of mercury poisoning is well, still poison!
