When preparing a compost bin, most people are under the impression that it’s only for vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, weeds, tea bags and other such kitchen waste. Not true!

Listed below are 10 unexpected items that are safe for your compost bin, will lighten the load on your recycling bin and help the planet!

1. Shred up your old cereal boxes and toss them in the pile.

2. Dryer lint

3. Receipts (all those ATM, gas station and convenience store receipts that add up in your car)

4. Paper towels and tissues (and the cardboard roll from inside the paper towels and toilet paper too!)

5. Campfire and fireplace ashes

6. Junk Mail and old bills (it’s satisfying too!)

7. 100% cotton socks (it’s true)

8. Hair (cat, dog, human)

9. Dog bone chews

10. Old rope

Anything that comes from the earth, can go back to it!
