Planting our Crops by the Light of the Moon

Lunar gardening is an age old tradition that has been practiced for as long as humans have been planting crops. Its theory is based on the gravitational pull that is created by the moon as well as the astrological signs. While the moon phases affect the moisture in the soil, the astrological signs of the zodiac affect the elements (earth, air, fire and water) that relate to each specific plant.
The earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are considered to be the fertile signs. Planting when the moon is in one of these signs is advantageous for root plants, as the roots are the part of the plant that is closest to the earth. Earth sign transitions are also a good time for transplanting.
During the time when the moon is in one of the air signs, Libra, Aquarius and Gemini, is when cultivating and harvesting are at its peak. The only exception to this rule is Libra, this is a time for herbs and flowers.
Fire signs, such as Aries, Sagittarius and Leo represent weeding, mowing, pest control and also harvesting. This is the time to harvest fruits and root vegetables, as well.
Planting above ground crops, like leafy greens, should be done during the water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
In addition to planting during the astrological transitions of the moon, keep in mind the moon phase times also.
During the new moon, the gravitational pull is strong, which draws the moisture closer to the surface which is a great aid in germination for the seeds. The new moon also provides the perfect time for planting vegetables that produce seeds outside of the fruit of the plant.
During the second quarter of the moon phase, concentrate on planting vegetables or fruits that produce seeds inside of the fruit, as the moon’s gravity at this time lightens up a bit and isn’t as strong.
At the full moon the pull is strong again, increasing the moisture in soil, but focuses more toward root growth, making this time of the month the time for planting root vegetables.
At the time of the fourth quarter when the pull decreases once more, it is time for rest and concentrate more on mowing the grass and retarding the growth.
