Don’t let Batteries be a Drain on the Holidays

Published by wind at 1:14 pm under The Green Scene, The Recycling Plant Edit This

Here come the holidays and with them, come many batteries to boot! Digital cameras, games, radios, portable electronics, GPS’s and remote controls all use batteries in some fashion or another. Regular throw away alkaline batteries can only be used once and then are thrown away; I have not been able to find a productive way of recycling these products to date. Recently, through the use of technology, many of these batteries can be replaced by using eco friendly, rechargeable batteries with battery chargers. More often than not, people buy a battery charger and some rechargeable batteries, they have a bad experience and go back to purchasing the throw away alkaline batteries. Don’t give up! With a little bit of research you can save a lot of money and energy by finding the right batteries and charger. Of course, the initial cost will be a bit higher but in the long run, these rechargeable batteries are much more cost effective and environmentally friendly.

Look for rechargeable batteries that are Hybrid Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries, they will come fully charged and hold that charge a lot longer than the regular NiMH batteries. Rayovac makes a great hybrid rechargeable battery and because they are capable of holding a charge for as long as they do, they are perfect for digital cameras, flashlights and other high-drain electronic equipment.

Purchasing a smart battery charger is important, as well. Finding one that prevents over or under charging, can determine if the battery has been damaged, and can hold many different size batteries is the kind that you’re looking for! Green Batteries is a great place to start your research!

I do use those rechargeables for my camera and they work great. I don’t even use regular batteries anymore because they only work for a short time, then in the trash.
