“Stop Aids: Keep the Promise” 2008 World Aids Day
Although, this is not known as a medical blog, I feel compelled to address a situation that is of the utmost importance, not only today, but everyday.
Since the year of 1988, December 1st has been considered World Aids Day. This day has been set aside to show to the world the importance of being aware of the seriousness of this disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded that there are 33 million people in the world that are living with HIV during the year of 2007 and 2 million AIDS deaths! There are three main ways that this deadly disease can be transmitted; sexual intercourse, through blood and from mother to child.
HIV and AIDS is not the same thing, when a person has HIV, this means that the virus is in their body, it does not transform into AIDS until the immune system becomes so weak that it can’t fight off many common diseases any longer.
There are multitudes of things that a person can do to help aid in the awareness and scientific research of HIV/AIDS. This years slogan is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise”, entwined with the theme of “Leadership” with the hopes to encourage leaders to take the necessary action to stop the AIDS virus.
On this 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, we should be excited about the scientific advances that have been made in this struggle, but remember that all these advances are only the beginning, there is much more to be done. World AIDS Campaign is committed to helping all of us participate in doing our part.
